Individual therapy

Individual Yoga Therapy adapts the practices of yoga, such as postures, breath, relaxation and meditation to meet the individual needs of people with health challenges. No yoga experience is required, as Julia will individually design a practice to help you reach your health goals. We begin with a discussion about your health concerns, then work with you to create a daily personalized practice that is compatible with your abilities, health challenges, interests, and time. Individual yoga therapy sessions will empower you to progress toward greater health and well-being.

Some of the common health issues we can help with are:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Sleep problems
  • Cardiac conditions
  • Diabetes
  • Addiction
  • Arthritis
  • Anxiety
  • Hypertension
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Cancer

What to expect

A typical first consultation and yoga therapy session lasts 90 minutes.

My yoga therapy work includes:

  • Intake: Inquiring and assessing client health history, current treatments and medications, current physical, mental and emotional condition, and clients’ health and wellness goals.
  • Yoga Practice: Each practice is tailored to suit your needs, capabilities, goals and life circumstances.
  • Take Home: Clients will be provided a lesson plan of yoga practices to be done at home.
  • Follow-up sessions: Throughout the process, you are encouraged to check in with Julia with any questions, concerns or personal feedback. Depending on your needs, follow-up sessions may be necessary in order to revise and update your personal practice.

Following the initial consultation, I will develop a personalized home practice that may include some of the following tools:

  • Appropriately sequenced and individualized yoga postures and movement
  • Conscious and mindful breathing techniques
  • Introduction to meditation and how to develop a daily practice
  • Visualization
  • Guided deep relaxation
  • Use of sound and mantra
  • Diet and lifestyle recommendations

If you are interested in working with me, please contact me today, and prior to your first session I will send you a link to fill out my online intake form.

What  is Trauma Informed Yoga Therapy?

Yoga therapy has shown to be an effective method for healing trauma held in the body, and can be a powerful complement to other  forms of therapy.  Trauma informed yoga is taught in a very specific way emphasizing control over one’s experience and honoring the limits of one’s own body.

For many people, traumatic experiences overwhelm their ability to cope, leading to complex issues that manifest emotionally, mentally and physiologically often for months or years after the trauma occurred.  Due to trauma’s effects on the nervous system, an individual experiencing symptoms of trauma may be constantly on alert, chronically depressed or fatigued.

A person may also experience chronic insomnia and anxiety or may develop unhealthy coping mechanisms such as addiction to food, drugs or alcohol.

Yoga is a physical and mental practice that invites individuals to  reconnect with their bodies and minds can facilitate healing through providing a conduit for the safe, controlled release of traumatic energy held in the body and mind.

In a typical Yoga Trauma informed session, Julia will guide the participant through a one hour stress management practice consisting of yoga postures and deep stretching, deep pranayama or breathing techniques, imagery, guided deep relaxation, and meditation.  In addition, the participant will be provided with a personalized “Stress management Prescription” daily practice.

A daily yoga/stress management session will not only bring a sense healing and peace, but also builds a sense of connection to the self, working on every level of being – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual to create a sense of personal connectedness and wellness.
